| Over a decade and half of experience in cancer palliative care, new lessons/concepts evolved and a need was felt to provide inpatient care to get difficult symptoms under control and offer respite to the stressed out family members/ care givers. |

| A majority of middle class are hesitant to get admitted in a hospice environment as a result of strong family bonds in India and many families try to take care of the patient at home and seek help from the treating oncologists/ family physicians. As a matter of perception, the western model (of hospice care), perhaps, may not suit the Indian psyche. However due to practical difficulty in giving time to handle and counsel cases of treatment failures, the traditional hospitals/ oncologists are only into curative part of the disease. |

| It has become necessary to extend the concept of Home Care to provide inpatient care to get difficult symptoms under control through a short duration admission at a free in-patient facility VISHRANTI. |

| VISHRANTI is a fifteen-bedded hospital to provide free inpatient care to the patients suffering from advanced cancer. This facility aims to bring freedom from anxiety and support to the family members/ care givers under stress by providing admission to the patient. This provides respite to the care givers/ family members. |

| The concept of critical care encompasses organizing gastrostomy, colostomy, tracheostomy etc to bypass the diseased system so that the patient can intake adequate diet, pass stools without discomfort, breathe easy and sleep well. The aim is to support the patients by providing palliative radiation or in some cases resorting to a bypass of the diseased system (through outsourcing) where a patient still has a reasonable amount of residual life with all other systems working. |

| The patient and the family members are educated on the benefits of such bypass procedures and their consent obtained before resorting to this course of action to bring care and comfort to the patient. The outsourcing expenditure is borne by the Hospital in all deserving cases. |

| Once the symptoms are controlled, the patients are sent back to their homes with the encouragement that our home care programs would continue to support them with professional care at home. Our Home Care Programs SATSEVA and inpatient care VISHRANTI form a unique combination of services complimentary to each other. |

| The Hospital VISHRANTI is providing inpatient care totally free of cost which includes admissions / investigations, 24 x 7 nursing & supportive care, diet, stay, guidance/ advice etc. |

| At this Hospital, patients’ families are explained that "It is not about dying, but seizing every moment of life with the spirit of living". |

| A value system amongst the hospital staff is inculcated to respect the sentiments of the grieving family members and provide them with all the necessary support. In some cases where the patient’s family is very poor, funeral expenses are paid as a little act of kindness. |
