Nature or the God has bestowed brains to human beings with the power of thinking and making a choice of one’s own. By a legal system or a social system or by faith of a religion, if a person is not empowered to make a choice, such a person is an underprivileged.

Having defined what is “underprivileged” in our perception, Care India identified that Inmates of Female Ward at Yerawada Prisons are one such category of underprivileged community in our immediate neighborhood being part of the society. They are surrounded by walls on all sides. They do not have access to a "doctor of their choice".

It does not mean that the system of Prisons is wrong or that it means that no lady doctor is assigned to attend them/ visit them to provide medical support. It simply means they have no choice to make, as similar to another woman outside the Prison to visit any doctor she prefers as per her economic status.

Therefore Care India offered to send a gynecologist from MATRUSEVA to Female Ward at Yerawada Prisons with due permission of the Inspector General of Prisons. This small effort is to make available an additional choice of a doctor once a week.

Ever since 1998, a gynecologist from MATRUSEVA has been visiting the female ward at the Yerawada prisons once a week to examine the female inmates and treat them for health problems specific to women. As a result the Hb count of female inmates has greatly improved with vaginal infections well controlled and ailments/ health disorders specific to women well attended.

Sending a doctor to outreach patients inside Prisons is a small act of our commitment and sensitivity towards the needs of the underprivileged.
